The 2019 NFC Championship: Travesty Or Triumph?
(A Donna's Diary Introspective)

When It's Hard To Be A Sports Fan

Most of us love sports. Whatever the game or discipline, we watch keenly as feelings of national or hometown pride, excitement, suspense, euphoria, hope and even vicarious achievement are conjured up inside of us by the heroics of the athletes involved.

Sport is a beautiful concept, with precepts of fair play, competing against the very best (and winning) and achieving greatness by pushing oneself past the point of what was thought to be one's limitations.

These enduring ideals of sport typically stir up emotions to levels which have the power to inspire entire nations whilst breaking down social, cultural, political, gender and religious barriers.

But sport can also bring out the worst in us. Brawls, ineptitude and even downright cheating are all undesirable features of sport which rear their ugly heads more often than not in this highly commercialized sporting era.

Such was the case during the recent NFC Championship. New Orleans Saints fans were livid, and probably still are (with good reason).

The obvious pass interference committed by the Los Angeles Rams was ignored, despite having occurred during the closing minutes of regulation time when the Saints were poised for almost certain victory.

It can be said that nobody knows for sure what would have happened, since a simple fumble, turnover or missed field goal attempt could've neutralized whatever advantage the Saints had up till that point.

However, given that - after the match - the Rams player who committed the foul proudly owned up to it as a badge of honor, one can't help but think that the Saints and their supporters weren't the only ones who saw the writing on the wall as the end of the last quarter drew near.

So advocates of fair play would cry foul, but some Rams fans may see it differently.

This is neither the first nor the last travesty of justice in sports - certainly not for the NFL.

Rams fans old enough to remember their 35-year NFC drought can probably recall at least a couple of times when they themselves fell victim to bad refereeing during pivotal games.

They might see Jan 20th's fiasco simply as late karma or fate, i.e. life's controversial attempt to right a long-forgotten wrong.

Or they might just shrug and say, "That's football.".

Whatever your view on the incident, I'm sure that you share my desire for a drama-free 2019/2020 season.
