Well, there you have it: the New England Patriots have ascended to the AFC throne yet again.
For the past 3 years straight - and 9 times over the past 2 decades - "Tom and the Brady bunch" have clawed their way to the AFC's throne of football supremacy.

It's never been smooth sailing, yet these guys have always been able to dig deep and produce spectacular exhibitions of true grit.
January 20th's AFC Championship game was no exception.
After falling into their usual, self-imposed relaxation trap on the heels of a significant lead, the Patriots were made to pay as the determined Kansas City Chiefs willed their way back into contention during the second half.
This swayed the game's momentum into the underdogs' favor, and they capitalized by scoring a "Hail Mary" field goal at the end of regulation time to hold the Patriots to a 31-all tie.
But here's where the game got away from them. They were simply overwhelmed by the gravity of the moment.
This was completely unfamiliar territory for the Chiefs. They found themselves in a tied championship game against a much more experienced, tried-and-tested, decorated opponent, whilst simultaneously on the cusp of pulling off one of the biggest Super Bowl upsets of the past decade.
So dizzied were they by their amazing comeback that they probably couldn't believe they were still in the game, not to mention that they had a real, tangible opportunity to actually win it.
They were rattled by the pressure, thereby allowing Brady and his cohorts to regain control of the match - ever so slightly.

For most teams in this kind of tense situation, a slight edge wouldn't be enough to inspire victory. They would need a little extra luck to go along with it.
But Brady's gridiron gang is no ordinary team.
The New England Patriots is a team like no other. It's a team which understands and believes in the notion that the whole is much more than the sum of its parts.
Its players know that a team's true strength is not measured by its tally of individual talent on paper, but by its collective grit and determination to succeed.
The Patriots understand that in order to win ball games at the highest level, you have to really want to win. That means responding to adversity and unforeseen challenges with a determination for victory no matter the cost.
It means that when the game gets hard, you play even harder, mustering the strength, resolve and stamina to go up a gear when lesser teams would either tremble with fear or wallow in despair. It means playing at a level above your natural ability and beyond your inner self.
The Patriots understand all of this and so far, they've been more willing than any other team to do all of these things in order to achieve that coveted victory.
That's why they're the Gods of the Gridiron; that's why they've won the AFC Championship at least once a decade for the past 35 years (with a staggering 9 victories from 13 AFC Championship appearances over the past 20 years) and that's why they're "invincible"... well, except for Super Bowl LII, but that's another story.

So you see, invincibility has a lot less to do with capability than with attitude. The other NFL teams would do well to learn this lesson.
Congrats to the Patriots, and we look forward to seeing them tested yet again next season.
