Hey there peeps,
Recently I was looking through the holidays for the rest of the year and realized that the Coast Guard celebrated its anniversary during the past week.
Understandable emphasis is placed on major military remembrances like Memorial Day, 9/11 and Veterans' Day.
However, it's ironic that I (and probably most Americans) didn't know that a major military anniversary like Coast Guard Birthday coincides with a time of year when we enjoy freedom to its fullest as we frolic, travel and relax for the summer.
So knowing that this freedom is only possible through the honorable, relentless sacrifice of military personnel like the Coast Guard, this week I felt compelled to focus on the theme of heroism.

Do you know that the base salary of Coast Guard personnel is only $20,000 a year? And we thought teachers were underpaid!
That makes me respect and appreciate these heroes even more.
From patroling our maritime borders, to conducting search-and-rescue missions at sea, to providing weather advisories for sailors, to managing major bridge and harbor traffic, the Coast Guard plays an important role in keeping us safe on, in, around and above the ocean.

On Aug 7th we also celebrate Purple Heart Day, when we remember the creation of the badge reserved for military personnel who've made the ultimate sacrifice of permanent injury or death during armed conflict.
First conceptualized by the late, great George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit, this most prestigious of military medals has been awarded to far too many unfortunate yet heroic sons and daughters over the course of American history.
Shamefully though, it was not until 1998 that these distinguished honorees were commemorated with the observance of Purple Heart Day.

Lastly, the 2nd Mon of Aug traditionally marks the commemoration of Victory Day - when we remember our victory over the Empire of Japan in 1945 - which signaled the end of World War II with the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The significance of this date in today's world may pale in comparison to that of its original celebration, perhaps because the notion of war with Japan may seem unimaginable and even silly today.
Yet back in Aug 1945, Americans savored this ultimate vindication for the utter devastation inflicted on them by the Empire of Japan at Pearl Harbor almost 4 years prior.
It's important to have these military remembrances, lest we forget or neglect to tell future generations about the heroic sacrifices made by members of our armed forces in these defining moments of valor.
These battles occurred at pivotal points in our nation's long history, helping to shape and define the world order we know today by thwarting oppressive, murderous regimes or pre-empting their rise to power.

These courageous men and women have safeguarded and continue to safeguard our lives and liberty for the sake of peace and prosperity in our nation.
The least that we can do, therefore, is to take a moment to remember, honor and pray for them on these special occasions.
